/decen/ is for decentralization and our decent towards a censored, age-gated World Wide Web. Do not fall for privacy theater, anything that relies on certificate authorities, revocation lists, domain registrars or other identity choke-points will not save you. For now, governments only attack the WWW, DNS and PKI. Disrupting the underlying Internet is too disruptive for now. Eventually, true IP service may become unavailable at retail, but that is a decade or two away. Decentralized systems are, at minimum, stealthy. They operate without asking anyone for permission. Existing systems like mixing overlay networks (Tor, I2P) or distributed hash tables (BitTorrent, IPFS) are effective; but are obvious. It is easy to tell when a peer is participating in Tor, and every query on the DHT is visible in the clear. Don't believe me? Check out <https://iknowwhatyoudownload.com> Good solutions will likely be friend-to-friend networks, not a global peer network. Packets should not identify themselves, appear random, and reveal as little as possible. These projects 'get it' so to say: - Pest <http://pestnet.io/> - Secushare <https://secushare.org/> (cool idea, but is GNUnet vaporware) - Retroshare <https://retroshare.cc/> (next update is mostly written by Claude Fable)
